Car Overheating in South Africa: What to Do Safely

If your temperature gauge enters the red, a coolant warning appears or steam comes from under the bonnet, pull over safely and switch the engine off. Driving on can turn a cooling-system fault into severe engine damage.

Information checked: 11 October 2026. This is general safety guidance; follow the owner manual for your exact vehicle.

What to do when a car overheats

  1. Reduce load and stop safely. Switch off the air conditioner, indicate early and move away from live traffic where possible.
  2. Switch off the engine. Apply the parking brake and use hazard lights. On a dangerous shoulder, stay clear of traffic and call roadside assistance.
  3. Keep away from steam. Do not lean over the bonnet. Escaping coolant can cause serious burns.
  4. Let the vehicle cool completely. Never open a radiator cap or pressurised coolant reservoir while hot.
  5. Arrange recovery if the warning returns. A tow is usually cheaper than an engine rebuild.

Overheating warning signs

  • A temperature needle above normal or in the red zone.
  • A red temperature or coolant warning lamp.
  • Steam, a sweet smell, bubbling or liquid under the front of the car.
  • A cabin heater that suddenly blows cold while engine temperature rises.
  • Loss of power or a dashboard instruction to stop.

Displays differ, and some modern vehicles have no conventional gauge. Read the owner manual before a problem occurs so you recognise the symbols.

Can you add water or coolant?

Inspect or top up only when the engine is fully cold and the manual permits it. Use the specified coolant and mixing ratio. Coolant chemistries are not automatically compatible. Clean water may be an emergency measure on some older cars, but it is not a universal repair. Never pour cold liquid into a hot engine.

What causes overheating?

Possible causes include a coolant leak, split hose, faulty thermostat, blocked radiator, failed fan, water-pump fault, damaged belt, incorrect coolant mixture or an internal engine fault. Low coolant is a symptom that needs a cause; repeatedly topping up can hide a leak.

Safe owner checks after cooling

  • Read the coolant level against the marked reservoir.
  • Look for wet areas, coloured residue or a puddle without touching fans or belts.
  • Check whether a drive belt is visibly missing or damaged.
  • Photograph warning messages for the technician.

Leave pressure testing, fan diagnosis, pump or thermostat replacement and hybrid or EV cooling circuits to a qualified technician. Never bypass a temperature sensor or cooling-fan control.

Prevent overheating before a long trip

The Automobile Association of South Africa recommends regular fluid checks and says unexplained fluid loss should be investigated. Check levels with the engine cold, follow the manual, have leaks repaired and keep scheduled cooling-system maintenance up to date.

Should you drive again after it cools?

Not if the gauge entered the red, steam appeared, coolant escaped, the warning returns or the cause is unknown. Roadside recovery is safer than risking cylinder-head, gasket or engine damage.

Used-car cooling-system checks

Look for coolant stains, warning lights, an unstable temperature reading, leakage and unexplained recent repairs. Ask for maintenance records and obtain an independent inspection. You can also review our finance information or request a trade-in assessment.
