How to Jump-Start a Car Safely in South Africa

If your car battery is flat, check the owner manual before connecting anything. Modern cars, hybrids and vehicles with hidden batteries may have dedicated jump points or restrictions. Stop if the battery is cracked, leaking, swollen, frozen, unusually hot or smells strongly of sulphur.

Information checked: 11 October 2026. This guide covers a conventional 12-volt passenger vehicle and does not replace model-specific instructions.

Safe jumper-cable connection order for South African drivers
Original Motordeal Premium safety graphic. Always follow the vehicle owner manual.

Before you try a jump-start

  • Park both vehicles safely where they do not touch.
  • Apply both parking brakes; select Park or Neutral; switch off ignitions, lights and accessories.
  • Confirm both vehicles use compatible 12-volt systems. Never connect a 24-volt vehicle to a 12-volt car.
  • Keep flames, cigarettes, jewellery, loose clothing and metal tools away from batteries and moving parts.
  • Use sound, adequately rated cables with no exposed conductors.

Hybrid and EV warning: never touch orange high-voltage cables or components. Many hybrids and EVs have a separate 12-volt system and specified jump points. Use only the manual procedure or call roadside assistance.

How to connect jumper cables safely

  1. Red to flat positive: connect one red clamp to the positive (+) terminal or designated positive jump point on the stalled car.
  2. Red to donor positive: connect the other red clamp to the donor battery positive (+) terminal.
  3. Black to donor negative: connect one black clamp to the donor battery negative (-) terminal.
  4. Black to earth: connect the final black clamp to the stalled vehicle approved earth point or solid unpainted metal away from the battery, fuel system, belts and fans.

Keep leads clear of fans and belts. Cooling fans can start unexpectedly even when the engine appears off.

Starting the cars

  1. Start the donor vehicle and let it idle briefly. Do not race the engine.
  2. Try to start the stalled vehicle. Do not crank continuously; after a few short failed attempts, stop and get professional help.
  3. When the stalled car runs steadily, leave both vehicles running briefly while checking that the leads remain secure and clear.

If the starter turns normally but the engine does not fire, the fault may not be the battery. Repeated cranking can damage the starter or flatten the donor battery.

Disconnect in reverse order

  1. Black clamp from the revived car earth point.
  2. Black clamp from the donor battery.
  3. Red clamp from the donor battery.
  4. Red clamp from the revived car.

Do not let clamps touch. Keep the revived vehicle running and arrange a proper battery and charging-system test. A drive may restore some charge, but it cannot diagnose a weak battery, alternator fault or electrical drain.

When not to jump-start

  • The battery is damaged, leaking, swollen, frozen or smells abnormal.
  • You cannot positively identify the terminals or approved jump points.
  • The electrical systems are incompatible.
  • The cables become hot, spark heavily or smoke.
  • The battery warning light remains on or the car stalls again.
  • The manual prohibits the intended method.

Move away from the battery and call qualified assistance in these cases. Never bypass battery-management, immobiliser or safety systems.

Portable jump pack or another car?

A quality jump pack can be simpler because it avoids a second vehicle, but it must be charged, correctly rated and connected exactly as instructed. Never place it on a hot or moving component. If unsure, professional assistance is safer.

Why the battery went flat

Possible causes include lights left on, frequent short trips, long non-use, a worn battery, loose terminals, an alternator problem or an electrical drain. If it repeats, book a battery and charging-system test instead of relying on repeated jump-starts.
