Answer first: Park on level ground, switch the engine off, follow the waiting time in the vehicle owner manual, wipe and fully reinsert the dipstick, then confirm the oil is between MIN and MAX. Use only the approved oil specification, add small amounts and never overfill.

Why the oil level matters

Engine oil lubricates and protects moving parts. Too little can cause severe damage, while too much can also create problems. The target is the manufacturer range, not automatically the top mark.

Before opening the bonnet

  • Park on firm, level ground and engage the parking brake.
  • Switch off the engine. Keep hands, clothing and jewellery clear of belts and electric cooling fans.
  • Check the manual. Some cars use an electronic level display and have no dipstick.
  • Confirm the required grade and approval. Viscosity alone is not enough.

How to check engine oil with a dipstick

  1. Let the oil settle. Ford South Africa gives a 10-minute wait in its general guidance, but follow the model-specific manual.
  2. Find the dipstick. Do not confuse it with another service point.
  3. Remove and wipe it. Use a clean lint-free cloth or paper towel.
  4. Reinsert fully. Pull it out again while keeping the tip down.
  5. Read both sides. The level should be between MIN and MAX. Repeat if the reading is smeared.
  6. Add only if needed. Use a clean funnel and the correct oil. Add a small amount, wait and recheck.
  7. Stop at or below MAX. Refit the cap and dipstick and remove all tools from the engine bay.

When not to drive

Stop safely and switch off the engine if the red oil-pressure warning remains on while the engine is running. A correct oil level does not rule out an oil-pressure fault. Do not continue driving simply because oil was added; arrange qualified assistance.

Seek professional inspection for a sudden level drop, a growing puddle, smoke, a burning-oil smell, metallic noise, milky oil or repeated top-ups. Never crawl under a vehicle supported only by a jack.

Common mistakes

  • Checking on a slope.
  • Reading the first pull without wiping and reinserting.
  • Adding oil only because it looks dark.
  • Using the right viscosity but the wrong approval specification.
  • Overfilling above MAX.
  • Touching hot or moving components.
