Car Emergency Kit South Africa: 15 Essentials to Pack

Car emergency kit checklist for South African motorists with a reflective warning triangle

A useful South African car emergency kit starts with a compliant reflective warning triangle, a charged phone, first-aid supplies, water, a torch and the tools your vehicle needs. Pack it securely, check it before long trips and know when roadside assistance is safer than attempting a repair.

The 15-item South African car emergency kit

  1. Compliant reflective warning triangle.
  2. Charged phone and power bank.
  3. Stocked first-aid kit.
  4. Bright LED torch.
  5. Reflective vest.
  6. Drinking water. Never open a hot cooling system.
  7. Work gloves and raincoat.
  8. Spare wheel or approved mobility kit.
  9. Correct jack, wheel brace and locking-wheel-nut key.
  10. Tyre-pressure gauge and compact inflator.
  11. Jumper cables or suitable jump pack. Follow the handbook; hybrid and EV procedures differ.
  12. Pen, paper and accident-information notes.
  13. Basic hygiene supplies.
  14. Blanket and non-perishable snacks.
  15. Vehicle handbook and secure document copies.

How far behind the car should the triangle go?

South African road-traffic guidance says that a warning sign for a vehicle stationary on the roadway should be placed at least 45 metres away in the direction from which traffic approaches, with the reflective side facing approaching traffic. If traffic, visibility, crime risk or road layout makes this unsafe, remain in a safer position and call emergency or roadside assistance.

What to do during a breakdown

  1. Move as far away from live traffic as the vehicle safely allows.
  2. Switch on hazard lights and assess traffic, fire and personal-security risks.
  3. Exit on the side away from traffic if safe and keep passengers protected.
  4. Place the triangle only without entering an unsafe traffic path.
  5. Share your exact location and direction of travel with roadside assistance.

Never work beneath a car supported only by its emergency jack. Do not change a wheel on an unsafe shoulder, blind rise, bend or live traffic lane. Arrange recovery.

Model-specific cautions

Jump-start equipment

Incorrect connections can damage electronics or cause injury. Read the handbook first. Hybrid and EV high-voltage systems are not owner-serviceable.

Tyre sealant

Sealant can expire and may not work on large punctures or sidewall damage. Tell the tyre technician if it was used.

Fire extinguisher

A correctly rated, securely mounted automotive extinguisher can help, but never open a bonnet into flames or approach fuel, spreading fire or a damaged high-voltage battery. Move people away and call emergency services.

Five-minute monthly check

  • Charge the power bank and torch.
  • Check first-aid, sealant, food and water expiry dates.
  • Confirm spare-wheel pressure and tool access.
  • Confirm that the locking-wheel-nut key is present.
  • Update roadside-assistance and insurer contacts.
