Engine Stalls While Driving? What South Africans Must Do

Engine stalled while driving safety steps in South Africa

If the engine cuts out while you are moving, keep both hands on the wheel, brake firmly and progressively, signal, and guide the car to the safest available place. Steering and braking may feel heavier because power assistance can be reduced. Do not panic or switch the ignition fully off while rolling.

Five immediate steps

  1. Keep steering. Hold the wheel firmly. Hydraulic power steering normally becomes much heavier when the engine stops.
  2. Brake steadily. The pedal may become harder as stored assistance is used. Avoid pumping it unless the vehicle manual says otherwise.
  3. Warn others. Switch on hazards and indicate if this does not distract you.
  4. Move left safely. Aim for a shoulder, lay-by or other safe place. Avoid sudden lane changes.
  5. Secure the car. Select Park or neutral as appropriate, apply the parking brake and keep occupants away from traffic.

Should you restart while moving?

Only consider this if the owner manual permits it, the road is controlled and you can keep full attention on steering and braking. Push-button systems, automatic transmissions and hybrids differ. If uncertain, focus on stopping. Never remove a key or select a steering-lock position while rolling.

After stopping

  • Do not stand between the car and traffic or repair it in a live lane.
  • If you see smoke or smell fuel or burning, move everyone away and call emergency services.
  • Do not continue merely because the engine restarts. The stall can return.
  • Call your insurer or roadside-assistance provider and confirm the tow destination.

Possible causes

Fuel-delivery faults, charging failure, overheating, failed engine sensors, ignition problems, contaminated fuel or engine-management faults can all cause stalling. A warning light or fault code is a clue, not a diagnosis.

Safe owner checks are limited to noting warning lights, fuel level, recent symptoms and obvious smoke or leaks. Do not touch hot parts, open a hot cooling system, crawl under a roadside car or bypass safety or security systems. Repeated stalling needs a qualified technician.

Reduce the risk

Respond quickly to battery, oil-pressure, temperature and engine warnings. Keep servicing current, investigate intermittent cutting-out, check for recalls and save assistance numbers before travelling.
