VW Amarok Curtain Airbag Recall: 291 Vehicles in SA

VW Amarok curtain airbag safety recall notice for 291 vehicles in South Africa

Volkswagen Group Africa is recalling 291 VW Amarok vehicles in South Africa because the curtain airbag may not fully deploy in a front or side impact. The National Consumer Commission (NCC) says affected owners should take their vehicles to an approved Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles dealer for free replacement of the affected components.

Which VW Amarok vehicles are affected?

The NCC notice covers 291 Amarok vehicles produced during a limited production period and sold nationwide from 2 June 2026 to 15 September 2026. Those sale dates are a screening clue, not a substitute for a VIN check: your dealer must confirm whether your individual vehicle is included.

What is the safety risk?

According to the NCC, contact with an interior component can prevent the curtain airbag from fully deploying during a front or side impact. Sharp-edged plastic pieces may also detach or remain in the airbag. The result could be reduced protection for the driver and front passenger, with a higher risk of head or neck injury in a crash.

Safety warning: do not remove trim, probe the airbag area, disconnect airbag wiring or attempt this repair yourself. Airbag and restraint-system work belongs with an approved technician using the manufacturer procedure.

What Amarok owners should do now

  1. Find your VIN. It is normally shown on the licence disc, registration documents and vehicle identification plates. Do not post the full VIN publicly.
  2. Contact an approved Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles dealer. Ask the dealer to check the VIN against the South African recall campaign.
  3. Book the recall repair if included. The NCC says replacement of the affected components will be completed at no cost to the customer.
  4. Keep the job card. Retain proof that the campaign was completed for your service history and future sale or trade-in.

If an airbag warning light is on, or the vehicle has accident damage around the roof lining, pillars or restraint system, tell the dealer when booking. Do not ignore a restraint-system warning or clear it merely to hide the symptom.

Does a recall mean the vehicle must be sold?

No. A recall is a manufacturer-led safety correction. The practical response is to verify the VIN and complete the free repair promptly. When buying a used Amarok, ask for recall-completion evidence alongside the service history and conduct an independent inspection.

Buying, financing or trading in?

Browse our quality used vehicles, review vehicle finance options, or request a trade-in assessment. Recall status should form part of responsible pre-purchase and trade-in checks.
