Truck Blind Spots in South Africa: How to Pass Safely

Large trucks have substantial blind spots beside, behind and immediately ahead of the cab. Stay visible, leave a generous gap, pass only when legal and safe, and never cut sharply back in front.
South African motorists share busy national routes and urban roads with heavy vehicles every day. A truck needs more room to turn and stop than a car, while its driver cannot see every area around the combination—even with large mirrors.

Where are a truck’s blind spots?
- Behind the trailer: following too closely can hide your car and block your own view.
- Along both sides: a vehicle can disappear beside the cab or trailer, especially on the passenger side.
- Immediately ahead: the tall cab may hide a small vehicle, motorcycle, cyclist or pedestrian.
- Inside a turn: the trailer tracks inside the cab’s path and can create a squeeze zone.
If you cannot see the driver’s face in the side mirror, assume the driver cannot see you. Use this as a warning to increase space—not as a precise measurement.
How to overtake safely
- Wait for a legal, clearly visible opportunity. Never pass near a blind rise, bend, intersection or barrier line.
- Drop back first. Build a clear view of the road and distance required.
- Check mirrors and your blind spot. Signal early and confirm nobody is already passing.
- Do not linger beside the truck. Pass at a controlled, lawful speed.
- Return with a generous gap. See the truck clearly in your interior mirror before moving left, without forcing it to brake.
Dangerous mistakes to avoid
Do not cut into braking space: a loaded truck cannot stop like a car. Do not pass on the left: keep left and pass right only where permitted. Never squeeze beside a turning truck: if it swings wide, stay out of the gap. Do not tailgate: you lose visibility and reaction time. Increase the gap in rain, mist or darkness.
If a truck moves into your lane
Do not race it or steer into an occupied lane. Ease off, create space, use the horn briefly if needed, and move only after checking around you. Never brake sharply in front of the truck.
