South Africa’s Opt-Out Registry: What Motorists Need to Know

South Africa’s National Opt-Out Registry will let consumers pre-emptively block unwanted direct-marketing calls, SMSes and emails—but the consumer-blocking phase is only scheduled to open in May 2027. Motorists should not pay anyone claiming to offer early registration.

Information checked: 8 October 2026. Based on official NCC and South African Government notices.

What is the registry?

It is a free, government-administered system supporting consumers’ Section 11 Consumer Protection Act right to block direct marketing. For motorists, this can include unsolicited vehicle-sales, finance, warranty, insurance and service-plan promotions.

When can motorists register?

  • 15 September to December 2026: direct marketers register.
  • December 2026 to April 2027: marketers test and cleanse contact lists.
  • From May 2027: consumers can register to pre-emptively block direct marketers, according to the NCC.

What changes for dealerships?

The NCC says direct marketers must register and cleanse their lists against the registry every month before campaigns. A requested callback about a vehicle, finance application, trade-in or service booking is different from an unsolicited campaign.

What to do before May 2027

  1. Clearly request removal from the marketing list.
  2. Keep the date, number, company name and screenshots of repeat messages.
  3. Block repeat callers and unsubscribe only when the sender is recognisable.
  4. Never share an OTP, PIN or full card details with an unexpected caller.
  5. Confirm claims through the business’s verified website.

Will it stop scams?

No system can guarantee that. Criminals may ignore the registry, spoof numbers or impersonate trusted brands. Treat unexpected payment and OTP requests as potential fraud.

Responsible dealer contact

Good dealership marketing is transparent, traceable and respectful: it records lead sources, honours opt-outs and separates requested service communication from promotions.
