Engine Overheating While Driving? What to Do Safely

Engine overheating safety steps for South African drivers

If the temperature warning light comes on, the gauge enters the red zone or steam appears, reduce load, pull over safely and switch the engine off. Continuing can cause severe engine damage.

Information checked: 5 November 2026. Your vehicle owner’s manual takes priority.

What to do immediately

  1. Switch off the air conditioner, avoid hard acceleration and move toward a safe stopping place.
  2. Pull completely out of traffic where possible, apply the parking brake and use hazard lights if stationary and creating a hazard.
  3. Switch off the engine. Do not keep driving to see whether it improves.
  4. Keep passengers away from traffic and stay clear of escaping steam.
  5. Wait for the engine to cool fully and call roadside assistance if unsure.

Never open a hot cooling system

Do not remove a radiator or pressurised coolant-reservoir cap while hot. Coolant can erupt and cause severe burns. Do not pour cold water over a hot engine. Keep clear of fans and belts: electric fans may start unexpectedly.

Can you drive after it cools?

Do not continue if coolant is escaping, a hose has burst, steam returns, the warning remains on, the engine runs roughly or temperature rises again. Arrange a tow. A brief restart may be justified only to escape immediate danger, not to complete the journey.

Once fully cool, inspect the coolant level only if the manual permits it. Use the specified coolant mixture. Water is not a routine substitute. Even if the warning clears, have the cause checked promptly.

Common causes

  • Low coolant or a leak
  • Failed cap, fan, fuse, relay or sensor
  • Stuck thermostat
  • Damaged water pump or belt
  • Blocked radiator or restricted airflow
  • Internal engine fault

Diagnosis is model-specific; replacing parts by guesswork can be costly.

Prepare before a South African road trip

Check coolant only when cold, look for fresh fluid under the car, verify warning lights go out normally and keep servicing current. Save your roadside-assistance number.

What to tell roadside assistance

Give your exact location, vehicle make and model, warning-light colour, whether steam or fluid is visible, and whether the engine stopped itself. Never diagnose a fault while standing in live traffic.

Quick questions

Should I turn the heater on?

Some older advice suggests this may remove heat, but the priority is reducing load and stopping safely. With steam, a red warning or hot-zone gauge, stop and switch off.

Will the problem repair itself after cooling?

No. Cooling may clear the warning temporarily, but the leak, fan fault, thermostat problem or other cause remains.
